Two-Strand Starter Locs With High Taper
- Difficulty
- ADVANCED
- Hair Type
- Coily hair, early loc stage
What it is
Early-stage locs, twisted at the root and still loose and cottony toward the ends, standing up and out across the top and crown. The sides are taken down into a high taper that runs bald at the bottom and blends up to where the loc field begins, and the front hairline is edged with a squared corner. The contrast between tight skin at the temple and open loc texture above is the whole idea.
Who it suits
Suited to coily hair that has been growing out a few months and is ready to lock in. Good for someone who wants the loc journey without carrying loose hair on the sides. The high taper keeps the sides clean for work while the top does what starter locs do, which is not much yet.
How to ask for it
Ask your loctician for a two-strand retwist at the root only, then have the barber take the sides to bald at the bottom with a taper blending up through a 1 to the loc line. Set the taper line above the ear and edge a square front corner. Keep the parting grid untouched.
Upkeep
Retwist every four to six weeks, no sooner, or the roots thin out. Wash with a residue-free shampoo between retwists and tie down at night. The taper needs a line-up every two weeks.
