What it is

The straightforward version: sides tapered short and tight around the ear, top left long enough through the front to lift and sweep back off the forehead, and the back grown out to sit on the collar in loose separated pieces. There is no fade line and no disconnection, just a gradual build from short at the ear to long at the nape, with the ends left ragged rather than blunt.

Who it suits

Best on medium-density straight or slightly wavy hair with a bit of natural body. A solid choice for anyone who wants the classic shape without a modern skin fade, and it sits well over a moustache or short beard. The lifted front adds height, which suits a wider face.

How to ask for it

Ask for a scissor taper on the sides, roughly a 2 at the bottom around the ear, blended straight up with no fade line. Keep four inches at the front to sweep back and let the back run to the collar. Have the ends point-cut so they separate.

Upkeep

Blow the front back with a round brush and finish with a light cream. Trim the sides every four to five weeks and let the back grow; a shape-up on the perimeter every couple of months keeps it from going shapeless.
