Mature Loc Column With Soft Side Taper
- Difficulty
- INTERMEDIATE
- Hair Type
- Coily hair, mature locs
What it is
Longer, well-knotted locs hanging past the jaw at the back while standing up through the crown. The sides carry a soft taper rather than a bald fade, so there is still a shadow of hair at the temple feeding into the loc line. The result is a column of locs sitting on a clean but not stark base. Root sections are visibly parted and evenly sized down the head.
Who it suits
For anyone several years into their loc journey with locs that have fully matured and hold weight. Works well if you prefer a softer edge at the temple, and it pairs naturally with a full beard since the taper does not compete with the jawline. Good for coily hair of any density.
How to ask for it
Ask for a soft taper on the sides, no skin, starting around a 1.5 at the ear and blending up to a 2 where it meets the locs. Keep the taper line just above the ear and leave a shadow at the temple. Request a light edge-up at the front only, and no loc trimmed.
Upkeep
Retwist every six to eight weeks at this length; mature locs need less interference. Wash every two to three weeks and dry thoroughly to avoid mildew. Refresh the side taper monthly.
