What it is

Deep, evenly spaced waves spin out from the crown and wrap all the way around the head, holding their pattern right down through the sides where the hair shortens into a low taper. The hairline is cut in with a hard right-angle corner at the temple, and the taper runs clean around the ear and down the nape without breaking the wave rhythm. Nothing about it is long; the pattern does all the work.

Who it suits

For coarse, tightly coiled hair that will train into a pattern, and for anyone willing to brush daily. Best when the hair grows evenly across the crown. If you're starting from scratch, expect several weeks of brushing before the pattern connects all the way around.

How to ask for it

Ask for a 1 guard all over the top with the grain, taking care not to cut against the pattern, then a low taper starting just above the ear and dropping to a 0 at the base. Square shape-up at the temples and a straight edge across the front. Keep the nape tapered, not blocked.

Upkeep

Ten days between cuts. Brush morning and night with a medium then soft brush, moisturise before brushing, and wear a durag whenever you're not out.
