What it is

Short all over but with visible texture and lift left on top, cut with the clipper over comb so the ends stay uneven rather than flat. The sides drop away in a low burst-style taper that curves around the ear and leaves the nape darker, so the shape hugs the head. A crisp line-up cuts across the frontal hairline and down the temple. The texture on top is what separates this from a plain buzz.

Who it suits

Needs thick, coarse straight hair that stands on its own, otherwise the texture falls flat. Suits round and oval faces because the lift on top adds height. The low taper keeps the sides from looking severe on a narrow head. Thin or fine hair will not hold this and is better with a uniform buzz.

How to ask for it

Ask for a 3 on top left textured, not flat, and a low taper on the sides that curves around the ear rather than running straight across. Say you want the nape left dark and short rather than shaved out, plus a sharp line-up at the front and temples.

Upkeep

Three weeks before the taper loses its curve. The line-up needs a touch every two weeks. Rub a little matte paste through the top when damp to keep the texture standing.
