What it is

Coils on top are worked into tight, uniform curl definition and left with a good inch of height, sitting on a high skin fade that goes bald just above the ear and blends over a short distance into the curls. The fade line is carried around the back at a consistent height. A boxed line-up sits square at the front corner and the temple runs down into a full beard. The uniform curl pattern up top is what marks this out from a loose textured crop.

Who it suits

Best on 3C to 4A hair that will hold definition without product weighing it down. Flatters square and round faces since the height on top adds length. Growth needs to be even across the crown, as the sponge technique exposes any thin patch. Straight hair cannot produce this texture at all.

How to ask for it

Ask for a high skin fade going bald above the ear and blending into about an inch on top. Say you want the top left long enough to sponge out into defined curls, not clipper-cut flat, with a squared line-up at the front and the temple connected into the beard.

Upkeep

Two to three weeks for the fade. The curl definition drops after a couple of days without work. Sponge and moisturise every second day, and use a light curl cream on damp hair.
