What it is

A mid fade lifted clean to skin at the base, opening right at the temple and blending upward into a thick, uncut mass of tight curls that sits square over the ears. The transition is short and steep, so the curls appear to sit on a shelf. The front line-up is razor straight across the forehead with a defined corner, giving the soft curl a hard base to sit against. The nape is faded out rather than boxed.

Who it suits

Works with 3C to 4A curls with real spring and enough thickness to stand. The height on top lengthens round and square faces; the clean sides slim a broad head. Curl that falls flat or hair thinning at the temples will not support the shelf. Skip it if you cannot commit to a two-week barber cycle, because skin fills in fast.

How to ask for it

Ask for a mid skin fade with the line starting at the temple, bald at the bottom, blended by the parietal ridge. Say leave the curls on top full and untouched, scissors to shape only. Request a straight line-up at the front with a sharp corner and a faded nape, no box at the neck.

Upkeep

Every two weeks; skin bases show stubble in five or six days. Curl cream on damp hair, no comb once dry, and a satin bonnet or durag at night.
