App Privacy Policy

Last updated August 29, 2026

This policy covers the Grade The Fade mobile app on iOS and Android. The website you are reading it on collects nothing at all — that is covered separately in our website privacy policy.

What the app collects

You can browse the Barber Chart without an account. Everything below applies once you create one.

  • Your email address and password. Used to sign you in. The password is stored only as a salted hash by our authentication provider — we never see it.
  • Photographs you scan. Pictures of a haircut, scalp or wave pattern that you submit for grading, and any selfie you submit to preview a cut.
  • Your scan results. The score, grade, written feedback and breakdown produced for each scan you save.
  • Your profile. Display name, username and profile photo, if you set them.

The app does not request location access, does not read your contacts, calendar or microphone, and contains no advertising identifiers.

This data is linked to your account

Every scan, photograph and result is stored against your user ID so that your history is yours and nobody else's. It is not anonymous, and we would rather say so plainly than claim otherwise. Other users cannot read your private data: access is enforced per row at the database level.

Who processes your photographs

Grading is not done on your phone. When you scan, the photograph is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which forwards it to an AI provider for analysis and returns the result. Two providers are involved, depending on the feature:

  • Anthropic — analyses haircut, scalp and wave photographs to produce a grade.
  • Google — powers the Try The Cut preview, which checks the selfie for suitability and generates the preview image.

Photographs are sent to these providers only to produce your result. What each provider retains afterwards is governed by their own terms, and we do not control their retention windows.

Whether we keep a copy depends on which feature you used, and the two are different:

  • Grading (haircut, scalp, waves): our server keeps nothing. The photograph is analysed in memory and the result is returned to your phone. A copy is stored only if you choose to save that scan.
  • Try The Cut: the selfie you submit and the generated preview are both saved to our storage automatically, as part of producing the preview. This is not opt-in — if you generate a preview, both images are stored so the result appears in My Looks. They are held in a private bucket and served only through short-lived signed links; they are not publicly accessible.

Your photographs are never used to train our models — we do not train models, and we do not sell, rent or share your data with anyone for advertising.

How long anything is kept

  • A grading scan you do not save is not stored by us at all. It is analysed and the result is returned to your phone.
  • A grading scan you save — the photograph and its result are kept until you delete that scan or delete your account. There is no automatic expiry. Be aware that saved scan images and profile photos live in buckets configured for public read: the web address is long and unguessable and is not listed anywhere, but anyone who obtains that exact address can open the image without signing in.
  • A Try The Cut selfie and its preview are stored automatically when you generate a preview, and kept until you delete the look or your account. Unlike saved scans, these are in a private bucket reachable only via short-lived signed links.
  • Your account is kept until you delete it.

Other services in the app

Our backend — accounts, database and photo storage — is hosted by Supabase, in the United States. Your profile photo is stored in a bucket configured for public read: the address is long and unguessable and we do not list it anywhere, but it is reachable without signing in by anyone who has it. The app ships with the RevenueCat purchasing library so that in-app purchases can be offered in future; if you ever buy something, payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google and we never receive your card details.

The app contains no analytics or tracking SDKs — no Firebase Analytics, no Sentry, no Segment, nothing of that kind — and does not track you across other apps or websites.

Face data

Some photographs you submit will contain your face. This section sets out exactly what happens to them.

What is collected

Photographs that may contain a face. When you grade a haircut, scalp or wave pattern the subject is your hair, but the frame often includes your face. For Try The Cut a front-facing selfie is required, because the feature renders a chosen haircut onto your own head — it cannot work without your face in the picture.

What is NOT collected

Grade The Fade does not perform facial recognition. It does not create faceprints, face geometry, face embeddings or any other biometric template or identifier. It does not match your face against any other image, any database, or any other user. It does not infer identity, age, gender, ethnicity, emotion or any other characteristic from your face. No face-detection or biometric library is present in the app.

Who processes it

Grading photographs are sent to Anthropic. Try The Cut selfies are sent to Google (Gemini) twice: once to check the photo is suitable, and once to generate the preview image. Photographs are sent solely to produce your result — not for training, not for identification, not for advertising.

Where it is stored

In Supabase, in the United States. A grading photograph is stored only if you save that scan; saved scans and profile photos sit in buckets configured for public read, meaning anyone holding the exact unguessable address can open the image. A Try The Cut selfie and its preview are always stored, in a private bucket served only through short-lived signed links.

How long it is kept

An unsaved grading photograph is not kept at all. A saved scan, a profile photo, and a Try The Cut selfie and preview are kept until you delete them or delete your account. There is no automatic expiry, and we do not keep face data for any period beyond that.

How to delete it

Delete an individual scan or look from inside the app, or delete your account — Profile → Account Settings → Delete Account — which permanently removes your account together with every photograph you have uploaded, including Try The Cut selfies and previews. See Deleting your account and your data below.

Deleting your account and your data

You can delete everything, at any time:

  1. Open the app and sign in.
  2. Tap Profile, then the gear icon to open Account Settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.
  4. Confirm. Deletion runs immediately and cannot be undone.

That removes your account itself, your profile, every saved scan and its result, and every photograph you uploaded. If you cannot reach the app — you have lost access, or removed it already — email gradethefade.ai@gmail.com from the address on the account and we will delete it within 30 days.

Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple or Google. Cancel that in your Apple ID settings or your Google Play account.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email gradethefade.ai@gmail.com from your account address and we will respond within 30 days.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. Kids' haircuts appear in the reference chart as a barbering category; that is reference material, not an invitation for children to create accounts. If you believe a child has an account, email us and we will delete it.

Changes and contact

If what the app collects changes materially, this page is updated before that ships and the date at the top changes with it.

Questions, or a request about your data: gradethefade.ai@gmail.com.
